Parents at Milton Junior School where on Monday up in arms with school authorities after being told that Samuel Parirenyatwa Street cannot have speed humps as it was used by President Robert Mugabe.

There are a number of schools along Parirenyatwa Avenue including Eveline Girls' High, Queen Elizabeth Children's Home, Milton Junior and Coghlan Primary School.

There is no single speed hump along the road and pupils risked being knocked down by cars.

In February, a Queen Elizabeth Children's Home pupil was knocked down by a car along Parirenyatwa Street on his way to school and later died at Mater Dei Hospital.

Angry parents raised the speed hump issue during a heated Annual General Meeting on Monday.

During the meeting, a Mr Xaba said Mugabe hardly uses they road and is only uses the road during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.

"This is very unfair. Mugabe only use the road during ZITF, that's once a year but out children use it on a daily basis and it's a busy road.

"So who ever made that decision was only concerned with the safety of Mugabe over our children's?" he asked amid applause from other parents.

Reads part of the AGM report. "It was reported that the Samual Paritenyatwa (street) cannot have humps, other measures will be taken to unsure the child safety".

A school official said they made several appeals to Government but they got negative feedback.

"The only positive response was that police offices will be dispatched in the morning and afternoon to assist control traffic outside the school entrances. However, the problem is we cannot supervise the police and at times they never show up."
