TWO teenagers from Old Lobengula suburb in Bulawayo allegedly struck an 18-year-old boy with bricks until he fell unconscious before robbing him of two cellphones and a T-shirt.
Lighton Ngulube and his 16-year-old accomplice who attacked Lucky Dube at a birthday party, yesterday appeared before provincial magistrate Willard Moyo facing assault and robbery charges.
They were not asked to plead and were remanded in custody to today.
Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza told the court that on December, 14, last year, at around 7PM, Dube was at a birthday party when he was approached by Ngulube and his friend.
"Dube was coming from a bottle store where he was sent by his uncle to buy beer. When he entered the gate Ngulube asked him for some beer. Dube told him to bring a jar so that he could pour some for him. This angered Ngulube who picked up a brick and struck Dube on the head," said Mageza.
He said Ngulube's friend picked another brick and also struck Dube who then lost consciousness.
The two accused then robbed Dube of his two cell phones and a T-shirt he was wearing, the court heard.
Dube was rushed to Mpilo Central hospital and after he gained consciousness, he discovered that his belongings were missing.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of Ngulube and his 16- year- old friend.
Last year, a party turned into a funeral after a man from Emakhandeni suburb was brutally assaulted following a row with fellow party goers over a cellphone.
Ayibongwe Dube died after five men hit him with bricks, booted feet and fists after he had refused to give them a cellphone.
So savage was the attack that it left him bleeding from the nose and unable to speak. He died before he could be taken to hospital due to the severity of the head injuries he sustained.
Five people were arrested in connection with the murder.
