A POLICE officer based at ZRP Nkulumane Traffic was arrested after she allegedly demanded a bribe from a kombi owner to release his kombi which she had impounded for allegedly failing to comply with police directives.
Nomsa Ncube, 45, a police sergeant demanded $80 from Sizanani Sibanda on February 24, and was arrested after receiving part of the money.
Sibanda reported the matter to Assistant Inspector Samson Pasipamire and a trap was set.
Ncube appeared before magistrate Temba Chimiso facing charges of demanding a bribe.
She pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to April 16, for continuation of trial.
Testifying, Sibanda said Ncube unnecessarily delayed him as she demanded a bribe.
"Your worship, Ncube had demanded a large sum of money as bribe and that angered me. I was also stressed that day as I was rushing home to attend to my child who was ill and she delayed me by impounding my car," said Sibanda.
Prosecuting, Tony Kamudyariwa told the court that on February 24, this year, Ncube impounded Sibanda's kombi and caused it to be parked at ZRP Nkulumane Traffic car park.
"Ncube told Sibanda that she wanted $80 so she could facilitate the release of his vehicle from police custody. On the same day, Sibanda approached Pasipamire and reported that Ncube was demanding a bribe from him," said Kamudyariwa.
He said the following day, Pasipamire sought authority to set a trap against Ncube using the $80 from Sibanda.
When authority was granted, Pasipamire allegedly first photocopied $60 and handed it over to Sibanda to give to Ncube as a bribe.
Sibanda, Pasipamire and his team then went to ZRP Nkulumane.
Sibanda met Ncube at the car park and gave her $60 instead of the $80 she had demanded.
The police officer handed $40 to her workmate Siphethokuhle Msimango who was also at the car park.
Ncube allegedly pocketed the remaining $20 and gave Sibanda his vehicle keys, before ordering him to return with the remaining $20.
Sibanda drove off and never returned.
Soon after Sibanda's departure, Pasipamire's team arrested Ncube and recovered $20 from her and $40 from Msimango.
The case comes three weeks after a police officer based at ZRP Pumula station was arrested for allegedly demanding a $500 bribe from a Bulawayo woman as a token of appreciation for not continuing with her fraud case.
Chrispen Mutambanashe, 29, was given $200 but continued to demand more money from Maggie Mpofu who gave him $50 and told him that she no longer had any money to give him.
After two days, Mutambanashe called Mpofu demanding more money and she reported the matter to the police.
A trap was set leading to Mutambanashe's arrest and subsequent court appearance.
