BULAWAYO councilors this morning (Wednesday) forced a cancellation of a Road rehabilitation tour within the city claiming that they have more pressing commitments.
The postponement is the second in two days as it was initially set for Tuesday.
The tour was due to start at 9am from the City Hall car park but a handful of councilors pitched up.
Acting Town Clerk, Sikhangele Zhou wrote to various media houses :
"The City of Bulawayo is currently carrying out road rehabilitation in various parts of the City. To this end, a tour has been arranged to highlight the efforts being made towards road rehabilitation.
"You are cordially invited to the tour which will commence from the City Hall councillors Car Park at 09:00 hours…" Zhou said.
However, senior public relations officer, Nesisa Mpofu tld reporters that the tour had been called off.
"Councillors said they are have other engagements so the tour is cancelled."
Although the road network is about 2 000km, council says only "600km was found to be in a reasonable state as compared to the 1 400km."
Residents and motorists have in the past expressed outrage over the pothole-infested roads with motorists complaining that little or nothing was being done by authorities to address the problem.
The bad state of the city and country's major roads has been blamed for most of the fatal accidents that occur weekly.
Most of the country's roads have outlived their lifespan by more than 30 years.
