Two man who protested against the Highway police patrol who are targeting commuter omnibuses were both sentenced to 4 months wholly suspended sentence while one of them was also sentenced to one month suspended sentence for theft.
Jabulani Moyo (27) of Nketa and Walter Murungweni (25) of Emganwini were denying the charges of public violence and theft when they appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tawanda Muchemwa. The magistrate convicted both of them and sentenced them to four months each which was wholly suspended for five years of condition of good behaviour.
Murungweni was then convicted of theft of $30 from one of the kombis and he was sentenced to one month in jail which was suspended on condition he restituted the complainant Brain Mandlenkosi Mpofu his money.
The court heard that on March 9, 2015 the two participated in a demostantration by commuter omnibus operators over the presence of National High Way police on the city Emganwini route. The two blocked the Toyota Hiace driven by Mpofu using another Toyota vehicle and vigorously shook it from a side to side while it was full of passengers and ordered everyone to alight from the vehicle.
Moyo then went on to the driver and held him by a collar of his shirt and said, "We respect you because you live in Nketa if not so we would have beaten you its not that we are failing to do so."
A group of people including the two began to assault Mpofu with fists and open hands and booted feet all over the body. Mpofu sustained injuries and a report made to the police led to the arrest of the two.
