A Bulawayo grandpa, 76, committed suicide by hanging in Pumula North following a misunderstanding with his wife over an ailment that had troubled him for 36 years.

No one had suspected that Patson Msimanga could take his own life so his death on Thursday came as a shock to family members.

Msimanga's wife who refused to be named said she had a misunderstanding with her husband before he killed himself.

"He has been living with asthma and had elephantiasis for 36 years but that didn't stop him from working hard. The only misunderstanding we had is he wanted to seek treatment from traditional healers while I told him that he should seek treatment from hospitals or a church. That's the only thing that I know. I'm so hurt by what he did, he left us all hurt," said the elderly woman.

She attributed his death to evil spirits.

"We're saddened that he didn't leave a note or call any family members so as to discuss his problems. I'm so hurt and I don't know why my love decided to take his own life in such a manner. There's no way I can say he was stressed by any financial problems because we've a chicken project that we've been running and our children have been supporting us," she added.

She said Msimanga showed no signs that he wanted to kill himself.

She said he died on a day he was supposed to go for an operation on his leg.

The woman said her husband was a hard worker despite his condition.

She described him as someone who was quiet and kind, assisting people who needed help.

She said their children were on their way from South Africa for their father's funeral
