A BULAWAYO man, angry that his wife told him to look after his children, waylaid her and axed her three times as she relieved herself in the bush, a court heard yesterday.
Charles Kasweka, 40, who is unemployed, allegedly crept up behind his wife in a bushy area at MacDonald Campus and attacked her. Kasweka's two children, the court heard, rescued Siphephelani Nkomo, 36, after they heard her screaming for help.
He appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Tinashe Tashaya facing attempted murder charges. Kasweka was not asked to plead as he was remanded in custody to September 16 for commencement of trial at the regional court. Innocent Marongwe, for the State, told the court that on August 26 this year, Kasweka and his wife had an altercation when he was accompanying her to Matsheumhlope where she had found a part time job.
"The misunderstanding started when Nkomo asked Kasweka to take care of his two children. The following day, Kasweka accused his wife of having an affair with someone," said Marongwe. "When Nkomo went to relieve herself in a nearby bush, Kasweka followed her carrying an axe and struck her in the back of the head and forehead three times."
The court heard that Nkomo got hold of the axe and Kasweka stoned her on the head several times. "Nkomo's stepsons came to her rescue. Mike stopped the attack while his brother Bernard went to call a member of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee," said Marongwe.
Kasweka, after committing the crime, the court heard, fled to Gwelutshena while Nkomo was referred to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where she was admitted for five days. Yesterday, Nkomo said she was still in pain and lay down on a bench during court proceedings.
