A FIFTTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo woman who is suspected to be part of some unscrupulous residents who went into supermarkets and bought groceries using counterfeit receipts was arrested at a local supermarket while in the midst of the illegal practice.
The woman, Sithembinkosi Ncube of Number 6 Donchester House located between 9th and 8th Avenue along Hebert Chitepo Street was nabbed when she took her deceiving antics to TM Hypermarket.
Allegations against Ncube are that she misinterpreted the meaning of her name, Sithembinkosi, literally meaning we trust in God when she reportedly took an already used receipt to buy her groceries not knowing that in business we pay.
It is reported that on 29 March, at around 6pm in the vain hope of making a bargain, Ncube, like any other genuine shopper, entered TM Hypermarket.
When she got into the supermarket, she is reported to have proceeded to the shelves and picked up five litres of Mazoe Orange Crush, one packet of liver portions, chicken necks, small intestines, one loaf of bread, cross buns, two chocolates, tomato chilli sauce and cough drops and put them in her carrier bags.
It is further reported that Ncube did not proceed to the till point as the custom is to pay for the goods but instead went to the main entrance where she produced an already used receipt to the security guard.
An alert security guard is alleged to have noticed that the receipt was not a genuine one and apprehended Ncube and handed her over to the police leading to her subsequent arrest. The goods, valued, at $22, were all recovered.
Ncube was last week arraigned before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Ndumo Masuku facing charges of contravening Section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 (theft).
She was remanded out of custody on $20 bail.
Prosecutor Mr Admire Chikwayi led the State.
