Five people have been killed by veld fires in Manicaland Province while two others were seriously injured this week as the veld fire menace ravages the country.
In a space of less than a week, two children in Nyamajurawere were burnt to death while in Chimanimani, a mother and her two children were also killed by veld fires that started in Charter Forests.
Timber Producers Federation CEO, Mr Johnson Mhungu described the situation as a national disaster, calling on the government to intervene and stop illegal settlements.
Villagers in Runhowani under Chief Muusha, who live right in the heart of timber plantations, are still in shock after witnessing the devastating effects of the veld fires.
Indications are that the province has so far exceeded the 2014 veld fire levels and the Environmental Management Agency provincial manager, Mr Kingstone Chitotombe has called on farmers to desist from using fire in land clearing.
The veld fires nearly engulfed Chimanimani Police Station but a quick reaction averted further disaster.
