A BULAWAYO police officer's wife is battling for life at Mpilo Central Hospital's Intensive Care Unit after shooting herself with her husband's service pistol following a domestic dispute.

Marble Chiture, 32, wife to Superintendent Crissen Masuka of Donnington Police Station, was rushed unconscious to the referral hospital following the incident which happened at their home in Northend suburb on Saturday.

Sources said Chiture shot herself in an attempted suicide following an undisclosed marital dispute with her husband. The matter was reported to the police.

Comment could not be obtained from the police yesterday with provincial police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango referring all questions to national police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi. Chief Supt Nyathi's cellphone rang unanswered.

However, sources told The Chronicle that Chiture shot herself in the abdomen. "She shot herself in the abdomen and is unconscious at Mpilo Central Hospital ICU. She has a splenic penetration gunshot wound," said a source. A police source said Chiture grabbed Supt Masuka's service gun before locking him in their bedroom.

"The couple was having a domestic dispute. While at it, she grabbed her husband's service pistol, locked him in their bedroom while she exited the room. After realising that she was serious with her threats of shooting herself, he dismantled their bedroom window burglar bar to stop her from shooting herself," said the source.

The source said after realising that Supt Masuka had broken out of the room, Chiture warned him not to come close to her as she moved backwards. "Masuka continued to persuade her not to shoot herself but as he edged nearer, she shot herself in the abdomen. She was rushed to Mpilo where I understand she's in a critical condition," said the source.
