A jealous former husband allegedly assaulted former wife publicly when he found her with her new husband in Bulawayo city centre.
Hardlife Jeke (34) pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Sithembiso Ncube.
He had allegedly assaulted his former wife Evelyn Mutandani (28) of Lobengula West when he found her with her new husband Eliphas Moyo at the Edgars Stores.
The court heard that on September 30 at 11pm Jeke met Mutandani who was in the company of her husband Moyo at Edgars Shop in the city. He confronted her after being unhappy that she had remarried and went on to allegedly clap her once on the cheek. Mutandani reported the matter to the police leading to Jeke's arrest.
Jeke said on the day he had called Mutandani telling her that he had no money but he wanted to met her to discuss over their children's birth certificates.
"I did not have money for transport and I required her to give me money. She said we should meet at Manor Hotel but I did not find her there and only found her at Edgars Shop. She was drunk so at that time she panicked thinking that I would harm her since I had misunderstanding with her sometime in 2014.
She smashed a beer bottle down and said I was there to finish her off. I told her to calm down. He later screamed and the police came to attend us before telling us to go home. Later I heard she had reported me to the police," said Jeke.
