Water shortages could scuttle BCC pre-paid meter project

Bulawayo City Council has said the low expected rains might present challenges in implementing the controversial pre-paid water meter project in the city.
According to the Environmental Management and Engineering report seen by Bulawayo24.com today, the Director of Engineering Simela Dube said apart from cash flow constrains in procuring meters dwindling water supplies could be an added stumbling block.
"Council also had financial challenges in procuring pre-paid meters as the cost of one meter was $250.
"He explained that according to predictions, rains would not be adequate this season.
"If this was true council might resort to water shedding.
"If was shedding was introduced council would experience challenges in using the pre-paid meters system," reads part of the report due to be presented before a full council this evening.
Bulawayo residents are resisting the proposed project saying water was basic human right.
