As the City of Bulawayo struggles to provide adequate water to its residents due to perennial rain fall shortages, it has emerged that out of the 77 boreholes which it sunk to supplement water supplies only 20 of them are operational.
According to latest council minutes, the council is embarked in boreholes rehabilitation programme for the existing Nyamandlovu Boreholes.
"The rehabilitation of boreholes (through the engagement of GIZ) was still on course, with 6 boreholes out of the 17 best yielding rehabilitated boreholes having electrical issues that needed to be resolved," reads the minutes.
"Only 20 out of the 77 boreholes were currently operational. ZINWA was rehabilitating 20 additional boreholes, of which 10 had been pump tested and were currently under service. After the intervention, the anticipated water available for abstraction from Nyamandlovu would average 12Ml/day."
