Pumula South stands commissioned

The Bulawayo City Council has commissioned 700 serviced stands under its new accelerated housing delivery programme.

The programme involves the pre-sale of residential stands in an effort to reduce the city's housing back log that stands at 111 000.

The failure by housing construction companies to fully service stands and build houses for the Bulawayo community in line with their contractual obligations, has forced the local authority to change its method of operation.

The new system now requires pre-selling and has ensured that the stands are fully serviced before construction can start.

This has brought about sanity and compliance to standards in the housing delivery in Bulawayo in line with the national vision, says Mayor Councillor Martin Moyo while commissioning the Pumula South stands.

"The new system has eliminated land barons and construction companies that were profiteering from desperate home seekers. The local authority will continue to protect the vested interests of the residents of Bulawayo by facilitating access of serviced stands," Councillor Moyo said.

In 2016, the Bulawayo City Council plans to avail at least 10 000 serviced stands to the community to further reduce the housing waiting list.

The stands were serviced at a cost of US$1.3 million and the road network has been worked on while water and sewer pipes have been installed.
