Robbers blow up school safe

AN eight-member gang blew up a safe at Bulawayo's Emakhandeni Primary School and got away with $10.
Sources said the gang targeted the Emakhandeni registry sub-office that is located in the school's premises.
They said the robbers damaged the registry office after they failed to get large amounts of money during the incident that occurred on Thursday night last week.
A resident said he failed to process a birth certificate for his child yesterday as the registry office was still closed following the incident.
Bulawayo Metropolitan Province police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said investigations were in progress.
"I confirm that we received a case of unlawful entry and theft that happened at Emakhandeni Primary School where a gang of eight men blew up the safe and got away with $10," said Insp Simango.
Bulawayo Provincial registrar Jane Peters also confirmed that robbers gained entry into their sub-office in Emakhandeni suburb.
School authorities declined to comment on the matter and referred all questions to Bulawayo provincial education director Dan Moyo.
Moyo said the school has not yet sent a report to him.
Sources said a security guard saw the eight men jumping over a pre-cast wall into the school's premises and he ran for dear life.
"I attended the scene on Friday morning and everything was scattered in the office.
"There were pieces of glasses everywhere and the safe box was empty. Detectives were all over the school on that day," said a source.
He said the incident affected the registry offices as they failed to open afterwards.
"I came to collect my child's birth certificate on Friday and I returned today (yesterday) only to find the offices locked," said a resident who identified himself only as Mpala.
