A WOMAN from Bulawayo's Emganwini suburb has been hospitalised with serious head injuries after surviving her husband's brutal attack that saw him striking her eight times with a machete following a domestic dispute.
Sikhululekile Ndlovu, 22, was allegedly attacked by her husband Alfred Lunga, 33, on Sunday morning in the presence of their one-year-three-month-old baby after she denied him conjugal rights.
Ndlovu was left unconscious after Lunga fled from the scene as residents rushed to his home after hearing his wife's screams.
The woman was rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where she is admitted.
The couple lives with Ndlovu's aunt and she was awaken by loud screams from her niece on Sunday morning.
"This couple is always fighting but yesterday (Sunday) my niece screamed at the top of her voice and I rushed to their room where I found Lunga clutching a machete prompting me to rush outside to call neighbours," said Ndlovu's aunt who identified herself only as MaMpofu.
"I asked him why they were fighting and he said she had denied him sex and that had angered him."
She said Lunga, who is still on the run, jumped over a pre-cast wall to escape from scores of neighbours who had gathered outside.
MaMpofu said her niece sustained eight cuts: five deep ones on the head, one on the thigh, another one on the back and the other one on her middle finger.
The Chronicle visited Ndlovu and she struggled to narrate her ordeal from her hospital bed.
"We were supposed to visit his aunt but we didn't find time to go there and that's what caused the altercation. He said he wanted to kill himself with a knife he was holding and I told him to go ahead as I was tired of being abused. That's when he went to take a machete and started assaulting me all over the body," she said.
Ndlovu said throughout their two-and-a-half-year marriage she had suffered abuse at the hands of Lunga.
Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the incident.
"I can confirm that we received a report of attempted murder which happened in Emganwini involving a man and a woman where the accused person used a machete to assault the complainant who sustained cuts all over the body," said Insp Simango.
She encouraged members of the public to seek counselling rather than resorting to domestic violence.
"We're appealing to couples to seek counselling services from local leaders, pastors and the police through the community relations section instead of resorting to violence which can lead to death," said Insp Simango.
