A BULAWAYO man is fighting for life at the United Bulawayo Hospitals after he was hit by a speeding vehicle in the city centre yesterday.

Lloyd Mdhluli of Paddonhurst was hit by a Mercedes Benz £320 along 9th Avenue, directly opposite The Chronicle offices.

The incident occurred at around 5.30PM.

The driver, Rodrick Zhou, 35, of Romney Park who was travelling with two unidentified females, said he was rushing to pick up some friends when he hit Mdhluli.

"I was rushing to Bulawayo Centre to pick up some guys and we were going for soccer practise at AmaZulu Sports Club. I really can't say what happened but I wanted to overtake a vehicle that was ahead of me when suddenly I saw two men in front of me and the next thing I had hit one of them," said Zhou.

Zhou, who looked confused, told The Chronicle that he regretted driving at excessive speed in the middle of town as it had resulted in an accident.

An airtime vendor who witnessed the incident said he saw two men crossing the road and suddenly the speeding Mercedes Benz tried to overtake another vehicle.

"One of the men ran across the road and the other hesitated. I think he was confused because he didn't expect that car to be there on a lane for cars going the other way" said the vendor, who declined to be named.

"The Benz hit the man on the leg and he flew into the air and smashed his head on the right side of the windscreen. He fell to the ground about a metre-and- a-half away from the vehicle. Blood started streaming from his head."

Mdhluli, who had no identity particulars, was quickly identified by passersby as a popular cellphone technician at the Bulawayo Centre. He was also said to be a Victory Fellowship Church member.

Three nurses in uniform, who were on their way from work, battled to stem the blood loss. They bought needles and drip from a pharmacy nearby to try and stabilise Mdhluli before an ambulance arrived some 15 minutes later to ferry him to hospital His condition was unknown last night
