Bulawayo City council has declined to chip in with a $1000 sponsorship package for the Zimbabwe National Chamber of commerce (ZNCC) investment dinner set for Thursday.
ZNCC is holding the event under the theme "REVIVING ENERGY SECTOR TO ENERGISE THE ECONOMY"
ZNCC had wrote to council on November 16 saying "This dinner stems from the alarming reports that the water levels at the Kariba dam are below 50%, and as such we are cognisant of the adverse impact this has on the power output of the national grid. "With a reduction in power production, comes an imminent reduction in industrial productivity which subsequently translates to shrinkage in the already lean Gross domestic product.
"As captains of industry, we have deemed it fit to address this looming quagmire through initiating dialogue aimed at crafting lasting solutions to our energy woes, hence the array of our panelists. It is our desire to see this perennial gathering of business executives and captains of industry in Matabeleland resoundingly succeed.
"This desire can only come to fruition with the support of corporate Zimbabwe, to whom the Chamber rightfully belongs.
"It is therefore against this back ground that we are humbly requesting CITY OF BULAWAYO to partner the chamber through a modest sponsorship of US$1000.00 in this worthwhile initiative that is aimed at promoting investment and trade in Zimbabwe and beyond".
It added "As our partner, we aim to increase your visibility and afford you mileage at our event, therefore we will acknowledge your sponsorship in all material pertaining the dinner".
Councillors said the general view was that while the
proposed dinner was worth while in view of the prevailing circumstances in the energy sector, Council was going through a financial crisis and should therefore minimise expenditure.
It was therefore resolved that "the request by ZNCC for partnership sponsorship in the hosting of the Trade and Investment Dinner at Holiday Inn Bulawayo on 3rd December, 2015 be not acceded to in view of financial constraints".
