A racing driver was lucky to escape unhurt after his vehicle veered off the road and rammed into the pedestal at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo's statue along JM Nkomo Street and 8th Avenue on Sunday night.
The driver allegedly fled from the scene. He was driving a Honda-CRV and failed to negotiate a curve near the statue.
Witnesses said the driver of the Honda CRV was racing against another vehicle, coming from National Gallery of Zimbabwe towards Bulawayo Centre.
"There were two people in the car, the driver was heavily intoxicated. He failed to negotiate a curve and lost control of the vehicle resulting in him ramming into the pedestal at the statue." said the witness.
"He however, escaped before police attended the scene," said a witness.
The witness said the intoxicated passenger was dumped by the driver and assisted police with investigations.
When reporters visited the scene yesterday, photographers who ply their trade at the statue were sweeping debris from the area.
"We've to dear this area. It's our place of business. We understand the accident happened at night We really don't know what transpired," said one of photographers who declined to be named.
