Bulawayo based songstress, Prudence Mabhena, has been appointed as UNICEF Goodwill National Ambassador for children with disability so that she can promote rights of children with disabilities.
Through her powerful lyrics, Songstress Prudence Mabhena has stood up tall against stigma, discrimination, and abuse of children. Her music has inspired parents to take more positive steps in promoting children's rights, especially those with abilities.
Speaking at the ceremony, UNICEF's Chief Communications Officer, Ms. Micaela De Souza, says through some of her songs, Prudence has demonstrated commitment to communicating strong and clear messages about the importance of children with disabilities.
"Through your songs you have demonstrated a genuine commitment to communicating strong and clear messages about the importance of child and young people's rights, including their right to live with disabilities," said Ms De Souza
Music superstar, Oliver Mtukudzi, who was also present at the ceremony, was appointed as UNICEF's Regional Goodwill Ambassador for Eastern and Southern Africa in June this year. Tuku and Prudence entertained the audience with a duet of the song Neria.
In her new role, Prudence will work closely with UNICEF in raising awareness on issues which affect children with disabilities.
A short documentary film, Music by Prudence, directed by Roger Ross Williams won an Oscar Academy award for best Documentary last year at the Florida Film Festival.
Music by Prudence tells a self-empowering story of one young woman's struggle who, together with her band, overcomes seemingly insurmountable odds and, in her own voice conveys to the world that 'disability does not mean inability.'
