A KOMBI driver from Tsholotsho allegedly beat up a policeman until he fainted after suspecting the man was having an affair with his wife. Quiet Ncube of Sontamba village under Chief Magama allegedly bundled Pisirai Choenda, a constable, into his 18-seater commuter omnibus on Sunday and drove to Tsholotsho District Hospital, where he rained blows on the officer.
Witnesses, who said they did not intervene because Choenda was a known womaniser, said the policeman could have sustained internal injuries. "Ncube suspected Choenda was sleeping with his wife Princess Mpofu. He was so angry, he grabbed Choenda from the police station and pummelled him until he fainted," said a witness.
Ncube told The Chronicle he was tipped off by people in the community about the affair. "When I heard of the issue I did my investigations and I once stumbled across some WhatsApp messages on my wife's phone from Choenda but I kept my cool and waited for further evidence," he said.
"Many people in Tsholotsho knew about the affair as the two were usually seen having quality time during the day when I'm on the road." Ncube said on Sunday when he arrived home from Bulawayo he found his wife not at home and when he tried to call, her cellphone went unanswered until after 9PM.
"People told me my wife was making endless visits to Tsholotsho centre where the two lovers would meet. This irritated me until I decided to confront the boyfriend at his house.
"When my wife didn't return home I decided to go and knock on the boyfriend's door. He didn't open the door for quite some time but I waited until he opened," said Ncube. He said he demanded the officer's cellphone but he deleted WhatsApp chats and phone numbers as they wrestled for it.
The kombi driver dragged Choenda to his sister's residence at Tsholotsho District Hospital as he wanted a witness. "My sister told me in Choenda's presence that she had seen the two lovebirds on numerous occasions. As we were still talking my wife phoned Choenda, whose phone I was still holding.
"I answered and when she recognised my voice she hung up. This was enough evidence but his resistance then angered me and I beat him up and took him to the police station," Ncube said. He said Choenda admitted the affair at the police station saying they would communicate on WhatsApp to make appointments.
"I kept phoning my wife who then answered and I summoned her to the police station. When she came she admitted they were communicating," fumed Ncube. He said he hoped the police would deal fairly with the matter.
A source said: "Choenda's reaction when Ncube confronted him shows he could've been tipped that Ncube was baying for his blood. We suspect he released the woman when he got the tip off but fearing the husband, she didn't go home." Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese could not be reached for comment as her phones went unanswered.
