Access to water is a human right- HRT

Harare Residents Trust has indicated that access to clean water is a human right which must be respected by all and the government must make it a point that everyone get the precious liquid.

"Each person has the right to a water supply that is sufficient and continuous for personal and domestic uses, such as drinking, personal sanitation, washing of clothes, food preparation, personal and household hygiene," said the Trust. "The quantity of water available for each person should correspond to World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines on how much water is necessary for survival (generally 20 – 50 litres, 100 litres recommended), and taking into account that some individuals and groups may also require additional water due to health, climate and work conditions. ‘Continuous' means that the regularity of the water supply is sufficient for personal and domestic uses."

The trust said core Obligation of the City of Harare is to ensure access to the minimum essential amount of water, that is sufficient and safe for personal and domestic uses to prevent disease.
