Mugabe plants tree of the year

The Zanu PF First Secretary and President, Robert Mugabe has planted the tree of the year Muzviru/Umviyo at the Elephant Hills Golf Course in Victoria Falls, to mark the National Tree Planting Day commemorations.

President Mugabe planted the velvet wild medlar tree at a ceremony attended by the First Lady, Dr Grace Mugabe, Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko, government ministers, Zanu PF party members and other senior government officials.

The First Lady and the two vice presidents also planted the same tree whose botanical name is Vangueria Infausta.

The President later urged delegates at the 15th Zanu PF annual national people's conference to avoid unnecessary cutting down of trees, adding that electrification if rural areas and use of solar power will address energy challenges.

The Minister of Environment, Water and Climate, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri said government has set a target to plant 75 million trees in the next five years to reduce deforestation and the effects of climate change in the country.
