Zapu cancels congress

ZAPU has been forced to reschedule its elective congress for the second time due to financial challenges. The party's second elective congress was initially supposed to be held in August before it was deferred to December 15-17 at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre.
The cash-strapped Dumiso Dabengwa-led party has postponed the congress to June next year after failing to raise funds for the two-day event.
Zapu deputy national spokesperson Patrick Ndlovu yesterday told The Chronicle that the decision to postpone the congress was arrived at following the party's failure meet its target of $200,000.
"We held an urgent National People's Council (NPC) meeting precipitated by reports coming from our provinces on the state of the party's preparedness for our elective congress. The NPC, taking into account the dire economic challenges facing the citizens of Zimbabwe and our members, realised that it's impossible to hold a legitimate and constitutional congress," said Ndlovu.
He said the party only managed to raise about $80,000.
Ndlovu said the NPC resolved to further postpone the event to June next year.
"The National People's Council (NPC) met and resolved to postpone the December 2015 elective congress to June 2016. We also extended the term of office of the current National Executive Committee (NEC) with a specific mandate to map the way forward and report to the NPC in March 2016," said Ndlovu.
"The other issue that necessitated the postponement of the congress is because we realised that the list of delegates couldn't constitute a quorum."
Ndlovu said the party would instead hold a policy consultative conference on Wednesday at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre.
Dabengwa admitted in recent media reports that his party was struggling financially and faced challenges in undertaking activities and outreach programmes.
He said the party depended largely on membership contributions.
Zapu, which was formed in 2008, has found the going tough in the country's political terrain and the party is yet to win a single electoral seat.
