A SUSPECTED conman was last week nabbed with a bunch of Zimbabwean bearer cheques which were wrapped with $1 notes at each end and tied with a rubber band at the infamous Moto-Moto area.
Simba Ganda (27) was ordered to pay $100 bail after he denied the charges of being found in possession of articles for criminal use as defined under Section 40 of the Criminal Law( Codification and Reform Act) Chapter 9:23.
Mutare senior magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura, presided over the matter as Mr Fletcher Karombe represented the State.
In his defence, Ganda told the court that it was not his intention to use the bearer cheques for criminal use.
"I wanted to take the bearer cheques to the bank and exchange them with United States dollars since I had just heard that the banks were accepting them," he argued.
He, however, denied that there were United States $1 notes wrapped around the bearer cheques and put the blame on the officers who had arrested him.
"They are lying Your Worship. There were no US$1 notes and I know that they fabricated the whole thing because I had a previous warrant of arrest and they had failed to arrest me," he said.
Allegations were that on November 22, at Moto-Moto area, Ganda was found in possession of a bunch of old Zimbabwean bearer cheques wrapped with US$1 notes stashed in his right side jacket pocket.
"When Ganda saw the detectives approaching him, he turned and changed direction. He attempted to run away and this made the detectives to become suspicious on why he was running away. He was stopped and searched leading to the discovery of the bearer cheques. He was interviewed, but failed to give the detectives a satisfactory explanation leading to his arrest," said Karombe.
Ganda was remanded out of custody to December 17 for trial.
