Zimbabwe Union of Journalists has joined the media fraternity to mourn the death of Independent Assistant Editor Stewart Chabwinja.
"In a sad period for Zimbabwean media industry, the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) mourns the loss of two veteran journalists," said ZUJ in a statement.
Former assistant editor of Zimbabwe Independent Stewart Chabwinja died last week on December 17, 2015 after a "short illness", nearly a week following the death of another prominent journalist, Christopher Somo, on December 11, 2015.
Chabwinja joined Alpha Media Holdings in 2002 as a sub-editor for the Standard before being appointed chief sub-editor for the Independent.
"Somo - the first broadcast trainer in the country – collapsed in his office in Avondale, Harare. He is survived by a wife and daughter.
Somo worked for 20 years at the state broadcaster, ZBC, having joined the corporation soon after independence in 1981, and leaving in 2001. He was well known in the media fraternity for his passion of training broadcast journalists," reads ZUJ statement.
ZUJ Secretary General Foster Dongozi paid tribute to both Somo and Chabwinja, saying the Union recognised their valuable contribution to the development of journalism in Zimbabwean media.
"May they rest in peace," he said.
