A TOTAL of 32 babies were delivered on New Year's Day at Bulawayo's major hospitals - Mpilo Central and United Bulawayo Hospitals.

Among the babies born at Mpilo, 16 are male, while six are female. Mpilo Central Hospital Clinical matron Susan Mupfure said the babies were all delivered normally.

"We delivered a set of twins, who made the hospital's New Year quite exciting. However, because they were delivered prematurely they are still in hospital and are constantly being monitored and cared for. The babies were all born through normal delivery. Sixteen of them are boys and six are girls," she said.

Mupfure added that they had recorded a lower number compared to other years.

"Another of the babies born weighed four kilogrammes compared to the usual 2,9 and 3,5 kilogrammes. It is, however, normal to have babies weighing that much," she said.

Of the 10 babies born at UBH, five are male and five female. Officials at the hospital said the mothers and babies were all in good condition. Miss Onelia Ndlovu, who had just been discharged, said she was excited about the birth of her son on New Year's Day.

"I haven't named my son yet but I am over the moon about the day he was delivered," she said.

Statistics from Mater Dei Hospital could not be obtained as officials from the hospital were unavailable for comment.
