Stationery and uniform shops in Bulawayo are experiencing low business this morning a day before schools open.

Most outlets said few parents have purchased uniforms for their children.

The first term of 2016 opens tomorrow.

A random survey at the shops has revealed low activity.

Some parents claimed they are struggling to afford the basics due to 'economic challenges'.

"I don't have money to buy three pairs of uniforms for my  Form One daughter. I only bought one pair hoping to add some after getting paid," said Nozipho Nxumalo who said she is a teacher.

However, some said they managed to pay fees only for their grade zero, grade One and Form One children last year as it was a prerequisite to getting a place.

Most school send away students on opening days for non-payment of fees.
