A 55-YEAR-OLD man from Hope Fountain has told a Bulawayo magistrate that he had a love affair with a 13-year-old girl whom he allegedly had sex with on several occasions. Japhet Moyo appeared before magistrate Charity Maphosa facing a charge of sleeping with a minor. The girl's name cannot be published to protect her identity.
Moyo who pleaded not guilty was remanded in custody to today for commencement of trial. "The girl is my lover," said Moyo. The court heard that Moyo bought biscuits and sweets for the juvenile and asked her not to divulge their secret love affair.
Prosecuting, Kudakwashe Jaravaza, said in October last year, Moyo proposed love to the girl when they met near his homestead in Hope Fountain and she agreed.
"The accused person and complainant would meet in the bush where each will be doing their work. The accused would be herding cattle and the complainant would be fetching firewood," said Jaravaza.
"The accused person and complainant would engage in sex nearly every day in the bushy area using protection on other occasions. The accused person would buy and bring the complainant biscuits, sweets, and jiggies as well as give her some money. He would then ask the complainant not to tell anyone about the sexual encounters."
The matter came to light after the teenager's grandmother saw her grandchildren eating jiggies which the girl had brought for them to share.
"Complainant's grandmother, Emily Ndlovu, saw her other grandchildren eating jiggies and asked them where they had got them. The grandchildren told their grandmother that they had received them from the complainant," said Jaravaza.
The prosecutor said the minor was beaten by her grandmother until she allegedly confessed that she had been given the jiggies by Moyo. She also allegedly disclosed that Moyo was her lover and the two had previously had sex on several occasions.
A report was made at Hillside police station leading to Moyo's arrest.
