A BULAWAYO man who was arrested with his two accomplices for cold bloodedly murdering a city man by striking him on the head with a bolt cutter for a tray of corned meat suffered a degradation following the botching of his most sought mundane escapes from the misery of jail life.
The 22-year-old suspected murderer reportedly tried to end his life in police cells through the cowardly act of hanging himself using blanket seams.
Circumstances to the incident, which nearly turned cells at Hillside Police Station into a death trap, are that Louis Dube of Number 101 Leander Avenue Morningside and his accomplices, Langton Nkomo (24) and Mqabuko Ncube (31) of Number 34 and 38 Starling Road respectively in Burnside murdered Cornwall Jones Richard at his residence in the same suburb.
It is reported on 24 August, Ncube who was employed by the now deceased Richard as a domestic worker reportedly hatched a plan with Dube and Nkomo to rob the late of his cash and groceries.
On the day, Richard had reportedly gone to Botswana for his routine shopping spree before the trio who were armed with a bolt cutter allegedly ambushed him outside his house.
It is alleged that the now deceased, driving a Nissan Sunny arrived home at around 8 pm and was assisted by one of his employees Fani Chekenya to offload the groceries from his car.
After offloading the groceries Chekenya reportedly went back to his quarters leaving his boss going to lock the gate.
While locking the gate, the trio who were hiding behind a wall, which encloses the front garden reportedly jumped into the yard and hid in the flowers.
When he went back to the house and while closing the door Nkomo reportedly pulled it back and in the process his two accomplices went inside.
It is further reported when they went inside, the bolt cutter wielder Dube allegedly struck the now deceased twice on the head leading to his eventual death.
Dube after committing the heinous crime he is reported to have gone to Richard's bedroom and took a duvet, which he used to cover his head soaked in blood.
The accused persons went on to ransack the now deceased's attempted to burn corpse bedroom looking for money but reportedly found nothing.
During their ransacking they stumbled upon Richard's 38 mm revolver with 19 rounds of ammunition, which was hidden in the drawer and took it.
Following their expedition, the trio seemingly as a face-saver went away with a tray of corned meat, which they later feasted on at Nkomo's place of residence.
In a desperate bid to cover up their offence, the three reportedly doused Richard's corpse with paraffin before they attempted to burn it.
Richard's lifeless body was found the following morning by Chekenya when he got to the house to commence his duties.
He reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the three accused persons.
The trio for the alleged offence of brutally murdering Richard has since been arraigned before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Tawanda Muchemwa.
They were not formally charged and were remanded in custody.
Mr Malvern Nzombe appeared for the State.
