AN INYATHI man who wanted to beat Kirsty Coventry's swimming record drowned while escaping from the police.

The action packed incident came after the now deceased Musa Siwela (23) and his friend Israel Ndlovu (21) were taking a nap at the dam enjoying the refreshing waters.

It is reported that the incident occurred on 13 September at around 5pm when the two were interrupted by members of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee.

The two were said to be on the wanted list for assault. As the officers were approaching in their direction Ndlovu ran disappearing into the nearby bush while Siwela jumped for the water. Siwela allegedly swam for about 15m but got tired on the way hence he turned to where he was coming from.

Siwela could not make it to the end of the shore and he drowned and never resurfaced.

The two members of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee guarded the scene hoping that Siwela would resurface but to no avail.

They made a report at Inyathi police station and the body was retrieved from the dam by the sub-aqua team.

The deceased was taken to Inyathi hospital en-route to Mpilo Hospital for post-mortem.
