A quote from a history textbook – "Zipra disrupted reconstruction of Matabeleland"
FINANCE Minister Tendai Biti recently said Zimbabwe's history was distorted as it omitted some events that took place like Gukurahundi.
Minister Biti is not the first person to cry foul of the history.
Below we publish some shocking proof of distortion that children are taught at secondary level. In the book, Dynamics of History Book 3 written by S Mukanya Chapter 19, under the title: Zimbabwean Developments since independence reads in part:
"Right up to the start of the election campaign, the hope was that Muzorewa's UNAC would win as in 1979. Alternatively, UANC if did not win, in outright majority would ally with Nkomo's Zapu and Sithole's Zanu, to keep Mugabe out of power.
"The dreaded monster was Mugabe who was considered an outright communist………..
"However Zapu did not accept electoral defeat in 1980. Although their representatives continued to scheme against government to plot a coup.
"In 1982 fighting erupted in Esigodini between Zanla and Zipra that were being integrated. Many lives were lost and Zipra cadres retreated into the bush to continue to fight as guerrillas. They disrupted all government efforts to reconstruct Matabeleland and many schools were closed.
"A dissident menace was brought under control on 22 December 1987 by the Zanu government," reads the book in part.
The book is being used by Form Three pupils.
Efforts to get a comment from Education, Sports and Culture ministry were fruitless.
