Chikato Government Primary School in Mucheke Masvingo is suspected to have lost thousands of dollars after its bursar Silas Chikamhi sneaked out of his office and went for good when Government auditors arrived for investigations.
Masvingo Mirror reported that auditors arrived without warning on Tuesday morning last week and introduced themselves to Chikamhi who then allegedly pretended to be collecting some books from the school head's office but used another door and sneaked into the car park before getting into his car and driving off.
Sources said it was later discovered that some receipt books are missing, banking was not being done for some time and there was no cash in the safe.
The school head Vongai Mapengo said. She asked the reporter to get the comment from the person who disclosed the information to him.
This is not the first time that Chikato has been in trouble with auditors as a tennis court built in the school for $14 000 was condemned last year. The auditors declared that the cost of material used was far less than the $14 000.
The auditors reportedly told the School Development Association Committeee in their last audit that the bursar was not being supervised by the school authority.
Provincial Education Director Zedius Chitiga.
Sources said when the auditors arrived at the accounts offices there were two officers, the SDA clerk, Rindai Mutikizizi and Chikamhi. Mutikizizi who collects school levy organized her books and handed them over to the auditors.
Chikamhi, however, pretended to be collecting some records from the head's office and sneaked out.
Sources said he later phoned and told Mutikizizi where to find the keys to the safe. It was when the safe was opened that it was realised that there was no cash and some receipt books were missing.
Chikamhi's phone has been unreachable since then.
His wife told school authorities that Chikamhi had left for South Africa but the wife's phone is also now unreachable.
Audit is said to be in progress at the school though.local news
