A SAKUBVA woman was last week convicted of physically abusing her 15-year-old daughter by trying to marry her off to an older man.

Manica Post reported that Erica Luwizhi (31) was convicted on her own guilty plea to the charges of physical abuse she was facing when she appeared before Mutare senior magistrate, Sekai Chiundura.

She begged the court for forgiveness and claimed that she would not assault her child again.

In mitigation, Luwizhi said she thought that she was disciplining her 15-year-old daughter since she had lied against her to her teacher and the police leading to her being summoned to the police station.

"Your Worship, I never tried to marry her off to anyone. She went and lied to the police that I wanted to marry her off to an old man which led the police to summon me to the police station.

"That made me angry and I beat her up. I thought I was disciplining her," said Luwizhi.

Fletcher Karombe represented the State.

Allegations were that on March 19, the girl informed her teacher at school that her mother wanted to marry her off to an older man who came to their home occasionally.

The teacher advised the girl to report the matter to the police.

Luwizhi was called by the police and warned against marrying her minor daughter off.

"When they got back home, Luwizhi took a hosepipe and assaulted her daughter on the back and on her left hand stating that it was punishment for her telling the police about the marriage," said Karombe.

Luwizhi was remanded out of custody to April, 8 for sentencing pending social services officials' visit to her home to investigate how she is staying with her daughter.

This was after  Chiundura ordered that investigations should be undertaken first by the Social Welfare Department.
