Artwel Murindi (24), a worker in the Bikita Rural District Council refuse collection department has committed suicide allegedly after Bikita Magistrate Tafanei slapped him with a $200 maintenance order.
Masvingo Mirror reported that the incident happened last Wednesday night.
Bikita RDC chief executive officer, Peter Chibi confirmed the incident.
Relatives blamed the death on the Magistrate who they said was too harsh on a young man who needed counselling more than a ruling that induced shock.
This is not the first time that a man has committed suicide over maintenance in Masvingo. Last year a vendor at Chivi Growth Point doused himself with petrol and killed himself at the local Magistrate's house.
Murindi was dragged to court by his wife who complained that her husband was not looking after the family.
He went for drinks with friends at Duma Shopping Centre that evening and left his friends in the late hours of Wednesday after which he drank poison and was rushed to Silveira Mission Hospital where he died on Thursday morning.
An angry relative who gave a speech at the graveside on Friday last blamed the Magistrate for being harsh to his brother describing the maintenance sum as exorbitant.
Many of his colleagues expressed deep shock and described Murindi's untimely death as heart wrenching.
"It's a sad to lose such a promising young man, it shocked and touched all council workers because his death was so sudden," said Chibi
