A MAN from Kezi allegedly bludgeoned his 74-year-old father to death with a knobkerrie after being assigned to chase birds away from their fields.

Mthokozi Ncube, 28, allegedly hit his father, Zekias, until the weapon broke into pieces while his mother wife and grandchildren watched in despair.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nkosilathi Sibanda confirmed the incident which occurred on Sunday at the old man's homestead in Mloyi Village.

Asst Insp Sibanda said Zekias collapsed as a result of the attack and later died while he was being rushed to Maphisa District Hospital.

He said Mthokozisi, who is suspected to be suffering from a mental illness, has been arrested and is assisting police with investigations.

"I can confirm that we're investigating a case of murder which occurred in Kezi. Mthokozisi Ncube reportedly attacked his father with a knobkerrie on his head resulting in his death. As the police we would like to urge people who live with psychiatric patients to monitor them closely and ensure that they take their medication," said Asst Insp Sibanda.

Zekias' cousin brother, Steward Sibanda, said the post mortem results showed the old man died as a result of the assault by his son.

He said relatives that were present at the time of the assault tried to call out for help but neighbours arrived at the homestead when the old man had already collapsed.

Sibanda said the family suspected that Mthokozisi had a mental condition but they had never taken him to a mental institution to confirm their suspicions.

"Mthokozisi became angry as his father had assigned him to guard the crops against birds that were invading the fields. The area has a problem of birds that eat grains while they are still in the fields.

Mthokozisi refused.

"Mthokozisi took a knobkerrie and used it to hit my cousin on the head. My brother's wife and grandchildren heard him call for help.

They found Mthokozisi attacking him and they called out for help as well," he said.
