A HARARE-BASED teacher who has been neglecting the welfare of his family was arraigned before the Mutare Civil Courts last week.

Manica Post reported that  Douglas Makina was ordered to contribute $80 monthly towards the upkeep of his wife, Violet Makina and his three children by Mutare magistrate,  Yeukai Chigodora.Violet had applied for $280 maintenance and claimed that Douglas earned $450 and also taught extra lessons at his Chitungwiza home.

Makina, however, offered to pay $20.

He told the court that he earned $100 and was paying rentals and bills for two rented homes, one in Chitungwiza and another in Mutoko.

He, however, begged his estranged wife to come back home in Chitungwiza.

"Your Worship, help me beg my wife and family to come back home.

"As I speak the directors of the private college where I teach asked me to bring my children so that they learn for free," he begged.

Asked by Chigodora if she wanted to move back with her husband, Violet refused and said it had been two years since they had separated.

She, however, agreed to let him stay with their son, but insisted that she would stay with their two daughters.

"I will not get back with him because I know my husband Your Worship.

"I, however, will let him stay with our son since it will reduce school fees costs on my side.

"I will stay with my daughters because they are still young," she explained.Makina was ordered to start paying the $80 monthly maintenance on April 30.
