Mberengwa woman marries sister’s son

A Mberengwa woman has married her sister's son allegedly after a prophet told the two that such a marriage would help end their social problems.

According to Masvingo Mirror, Patricia Nkomo (26) and Garikanani Muzini (32) were found guilty of incest by Magistrate Tavengwa Sangster when they appeared in court last week.

It was the State case that between March 2013 and 2016 Muzini and Nkomo being aunt and nephew unlawfully had sexual intercourse together knowing that they were related within the prohibited degrees of relationship.

In March 2013, Amina Phiri saw that her daughter was pregnant and asked who the responsible man was and was told that it was Muzini her sister's son. After realising that they were in trouble, the two love birds eloped and stayed as husband and wife.

Jenifa Muzini, Garikanai's mother then reported the case to the Police. The two were brought to court and found guilty of having sexual intercourse within the prohibited degree of relationship as defined in section 75(2)(i) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act chapter 9:23.

Magistrate Tavengwa Sangster slapped them with a nine months jail term wholly suspended on condition each performs 315 hours of community service.

Mazini will work at Makuva High School while Nkomo will be at Makuva Clinic. Wadzanayi Shayanewako prosecuted.
