IN an incident typical of a comic story from the Red Bull jokes, a soldier based at Imbizo Barracks ran riot threatening to bludgeon his wife to death when he allegedly stabbed her all over her body for a yet unidentified reason.
So fearful was the way the fighter sought to maim his wife when after inflicting one stab he would reportedly take a nap before waking up to stab her again.
The wife, perhaps being a love martyr during the stabbing series, she reportedly did not scream for help from neighbours.
The matter of attempting to end his wife's life was heard when Freddie Mlilo (31) of Number 16 Married Quarters Imbizo Barracks was brought before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Gideon Ruvetsa.
Mlilo was being charged with attempted murder as defined in section 189 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
The State facts as presented by prosecutor Mr Jeremiah Mutsindikwa was that Mlilo courted the long arm of the law when he allegedly attempted to slay his wife Martha Mpukuta using a knife.
Mpukuta is reportedly employed by the Ministry of Defence as a general hand.
Circumstances to the frenzied knife attack are that on 8 October at around 8 pm the accused person who had gone on a boozing binge arrived home 'dead' drunk.
Upon his arrival and having gathered courage from the wise waters he quickly went to the bedroom and called his wife before locking the door.
Perhaps in a move to dampen the attention of their neighbours, Mlilo is alleged to have turned on the television set and put its volume to maximum level.
The court further heard that for no apparent reason the accused person started shouting at the complainant saying he wanted to kill her.
Living true to his threats he is alleged to have wielded a knife and started stabbing the complainant on her right hand.
After stabbing her on the hand he then sat on the bed saying he wanted to rest a little bit before progressing with his stabbing spree, piercing his wife several times on her hands, face, ear and head. During the stabbing Mlilo is reported to have been continuously shouting that he wanted to 'slaughter' her.
It is further reported that after numerous stabs the accused told the complainant that he wanted to sleep for a while and she should breathe for the last time, because when he woke up he was going to finally finish her off.
After reading the riot act he lay on the bed and fell asleep with the dreaded weapon by his side.
When the complainant realised that the accused person had fallen asleep she exploited the opportunity by unlocking the door and bolted out of the bedroom, which was nearly turned into a death zone.
After her close shave she went and reported the matter to the military police at the barrack who later attended to the scene leading to the subsequent apprehension of Mlilo.
The complainant as a result of the savage attack sustained deep wounds on the head, hands, right eye and left ear and was referred to hospital for medication.
Mlilo for the crime, was not formally charged and was remanded in custody to 21 October.
