A JOBLESS Mutare man was last Tuesday hauled before the courts by his estranged wife over maintenance.
Manica Post reported that Nisbert Simbi was dragged to court by Snodia Machekano who was praying for $160 monthly maintenance for their two children aged 11 and seven years respectively. Venencia Mugota presided over the matter.Machekano described Simbi as an irresponsible man who does not want to provide for his two children.
"He has two other children with another wife, but they seem more important than the two we have together. He gets more than $300 from piece jobs each month and the money that I am claiming is for the children's school fees, food and clothes," said Machekano.
In response, Simbi told the court that he was not working and there was nowhere he could get the money.
Mugota advised him that he wouldn't have fathered these children if he knew he would not be able to take care of them.
Simbi offered $40 maintenance, but openly told the court that he was not going to be responsible for the two children's school fees.
"I can pay the $40, but I am not going to pay for the children's school fees. It is very expensive. I can only be held responsible if we transfer them to cheaper schools in the rural areas. I have two other children to take care of. Since Snodia is working, she should take care of the fees,' he said.
In her ruling, Mugota ordered Simbi to pay $40 maintenance. She also ordered him to pay $152 for the children's school fees with effect from June 1.
