The founding chairman of the Midlands State University council Canaan Dube and Vice Chancellor Professor Ngwabi Bhebe are leaving the institution.

Masvingo Mirror reported that the duo have elected not to renew their contracts when they expire towards the end of the year after serving the biggest university by numbers for 34 years between them.

"As an advocate of good corporate governance it is important that I lead by example, so after my term of office expires in October, I will be stepping down for someone to take the university to another level.

"I told the Minister that I remain a perpetual servant of the Government although I am leaving the post of council chairman," said Dube in a telephone interview with The Mirror.

The Government has since advertised for the post of Vice Chancellor in the local Press.

"The Council of Midlands State University, in consultation with the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, invites applications for the position of Vice-Chancellor," part of the advert says.

Efforts to get a comment from Prof Bhebe were fruitless by the time of going to Press as he was said to be out of the country. Dube said he will remain an ordinary part time lecturer at the former Gweru Teachers' College as he had developed a passion for teaching.

The outgoing chairman superintendent the institution from 400 students to the current 22 000 offered degrees in 14 different faculties.

They also acquired a 185-hectare piece of land and the TelOne building on it at a cost of $2.5m, a loan they acquired from the bank and have since been paid back. A move that has gone a long way in easing shortage of classrooms.

Dube is the chairman of blue chip beverage manufacturer Delta Corporation and Quality Corporate Governance Centre Pvt Ltd, director at Barclays Bank, Edgars Stores and Bata Shoe Company.

He is also an author of several books on corporate governance. Dube is also a senior partner at Dube, Manikai and Hwacha Legal Practioners, he was the first lawyer to hail from Chivi in Masvingo. He is a former president of the Law Society of Zimbabwe.

Prof Bhebe is a celebrated historian and author of several books and journals. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Imperial History in 1972 from the University of London. Prof lectured at various universities in Zambia, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland.

He also served in the Research Board from 1984 to 1991 and was appointed University of Zimbabwe Pro Vice Chancellor from 1992 until 1995.
