A 29-year-old man from Mkoba 7 in Gweru has been ordered to do 420 hours of community service after he pushed his wife into a fire following a phone call he suspected was from a lover.
Masvingo Mirror reported that it was the State case that Canaan Mapfumo arrived home at around 9 PM from the beer hall and found his wife Matildah Moyo talking on her phone and asked her who she was talking to and she allegedly took time to respond and Mapfumo assaulted her and pushed her into the fire.
Mapfumo also took away the cell phone and realized that the number was not served but Moyo said the number belonged to her sister and she had not yet saved it.
Mapfumo assaulted his wife all over the body using a wooden plank and he then left her lying on the ground and went to bed.
Moyo sustained burns on the legs, experiences pain on the back and she was medically examined and the report was produced in court as evidence.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charge.
"Domestic violence have increased, instead of solving disputes by discussions, you decided to fight your wife. You pushed her into the fire and right now she is having problems in walking, therefore I will sentence you to 420 hours of community service, furthermore six months to prison which are wholly suspended for five years on condition that you will not commit the same crime for the next five years," said Shortgame.
Lloyd Mavhiza prosecuted.
