More than sixty patients were screened for the cleft lip and palate by Operation of Hope officials at Mpilo Central Hospital on Monday.

Through its Facebook post the hospital said cleft lip and palate is a natural phenomenon where one is born with an opening in the upper lip right, for some, below or into the nose base.

"However there is a remarkable difference between cleft lip and cleft palate. Cleft lip occurs outside the mouth whereas cleft palate occurs inside the mouth," reads the post.

"In an interview with the Operation of Hope CEO, Jennifer Mora, said the condition defies the bearers of producing the 'cl' sound whereas someone without this condition is able to articulate the sounds well."

The organisation came to Bulawayo for the first time and surgical operations are underway.
