A gun totting 70-year-old Buhera man will spend the next 15 years behind bars after he was convicted of raping his seven-year-old granddaughter on two occasions.
Manica Post reported that Rubious Nyamunda of Chitanda Village threatened to shoot the helpless minor with his gun and forced himself on the girl in a maize garden.
Rusape regional magistrate, Livingstone Chipadaza, however, set aside five years of the sentence considering Nyamunda's advanced age.
It was the State's case led by district public prosecutor, Tirivanhu Mutyasira, that the crimes were committed in November last year.
"On unknown dates, but in November last year at about 230pm, the accused was watering his maize crop in his garden which is near his homestead.
He called the complainant and asked her to go and collect his sunglasses from the house. She complied.
On her return, he asked the Grade 2 pupil to lie on her back with her clothes removed. She tried to resist, but he threatened to shoot her with is gun.
"The girl complied and he raped her once. After committing the crime he told the girl not to tell anyone, otherwise he would shoot her and throw her body in dam. The girl did not report the case," said Mutyasira.
The suspect repeated the same modus operandi on November 10.
At almost the same time, he called the girl again into the maize field and raped her.
The matter came to light after a girl from the village saw the minor wearing her pant.
She asked her what had happened and she revealed the abuse.
The case was subsequently reported to the police leading to Nyamunda's arrest.
