‘I buy $2 electricity tokens monthly’

THE court gallery was left in roars of laughter after a Sakubva man tried to evade paying maintenance by claiming that they use $2 electricity tokens per month.
Manica Post reported that this was after Knowledge Matasva had been dragged to court by his wife, Talent Madhove who was claiming $390 maintenance for their two children.
Matasva offered $15.
Madhove described her husband as an irresponsible man who completely ignored the needs of his children and wife despite the fact that he gets at least $800 a month from his carpentry business.
Matasva, however, told the court that he was only an assistant carpenter who got $50 monthly as his earnings.
He further told the court that Madhove had thrown him out of their Sakubva lodgings and was now homeless.
"Why would I pay maintenance to someone who threw me out of the house? Surprisingly, she is claiming rentals and bills from me.
"Besides that she is claiming $50 for electricity bills and yet when we stayed together we used $2 electricity tokens for the whole month. What does she need to use the other $48 for," argued Matasva.
The presiding magistrate, Venencia Mugota, however, warned him against lying to the court.
"I was not born yesterday Matasva that I would believe those white lies that you use only $2 electricity token for the whole month. Please give us a reasonable amount," said the magistrate, but Matasva insisted that he only spent $2 on electricity.
"Your Worship he usually buys electricity tokens for $10 for the whole month, but they only last for about a week which is why I want $50. He is just lying so that he can evade paying maintenance," Madhove disputed.
Since Matasva had disputed the claims that he was a carpenter and that he owned a carpentry workshop, Madhove was ordered by the court to go to the Mutare Showgrounds and verify Matasva's monthly earnings.
The matter was adjourned to June 2.
