BULAWAYO Metropolitan province leads the country in terms of adopting and using Information and Communication Technology in the country, a survey has revealed.
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) household survey 2014 shows that Bulawayo province leads the pack in terms of internet, television, electricity and mobile cellular usage.
The ICT survey was conducted by Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency and funded by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ).
"Bulawayo province had the highest proportion of about 97 percent households with access to electricity followed by Harare with a proportion of about 81 percent.
The least proportion of households with access to electricity was about 41 percent in Matabeleland North province," reads the report.
The report showed that Matabeleland had the highest proportion of about 59 percent households without access to electricity followed by Manicaland province with a proportion of about 54 percent.
Only three percent of households in Bulawayo had no access to electricity.
Nationally, Bulawayo had the highest proportion of households with access to a radio at home with 75 percent followed by Mashonaland Central with close to 67 percent while Matabeleland North had the least ranking at only 49 percent.
The report showed that the radio was still more popular in the rural areas with a proportion of households with access to a radio at 75 percent compared to 68 percent in urban areas.
The province tops in access to the internet at home with 64 percent followed closely by Harare at 63 percent.
"Matabeleland had the highest proportion of households with no member of the household with internet access at home at about 82 percent followed by Mashonaland Central province with about 80 percent," reads the report.
Bulawayo also tops in terms of access to computers and mobile cellphones in the country.
Zimstats board chairperson Professor Senelani Hove-Musekwa said the first stand-alone national survey on ICT access by households and use by individuals was conducted in 2014.
"The findings of the survey are being presented as part of the agency's drive to broaden the country's understanding of the observed levels and trends in ICT access and use," said Prof Musekwa.
She said household surveys are important sources of ICT statistics and these statistics provide insights into how and where people access and use ICT.
The survey was conducted in July 2014 in 2,076 enumeration areas with a total of 31,140 households used in the survey.
