Norah Madzivire, a notorious female thief who was convicted early this year for stealing wheelbarrows from people's homes, has appeared at the Chivhu Courts soon after leaving prison on presidential amnesty.
Masvingo Mirror reported that Madzivire (38) of Manyene in Chief Nyoka's area was released while she was serving a six month jail term.
She pleaded not guilty before Resident Magistrate Archie Wochiwunga for stealing 4 pockets of potatoes at the Chivhu vegetable market centre. The court heard that on June 2 2016 at around 4am, Madzivire went to the market and took four pockets of potatoes each weighing 15 kilograms which belonged to Nellia Nyama, a vendor.
A security guard identified her and ran after her. She then dropped two pockets of the stolen potatoes and ran away. The guard recovered the potatoes and alerted other security guards. They searched for Madzivire and found her hiding under a motor vehicle.
"Your Worship, I did not steal potatoes. When they found me under the car, I was just passing time so that I could attend the court at 8 in the morning because I had a pending case of stock theft," said Madzivire in her defense.
Madzivire has several previous theft convictions.
The Mirror heard that Madzivire was nabbed by the Police just after she appeared in court on Friday for another theft offence that she committed.
Magistrate Wochiwunga remanded Madzivire in custody to June 7, 2016 for continuation of trial.
