City council digs, leaves trenches uncovered

Harare Residents Trust has accused the city of Harare of leaving trenches uncovered after replacing pipes, which the organisation claim it poses serious danger to the residents.
"The City of Harare dug trenches to replace pipes along Runyararo Street and Mhlanga Street in Mbare two months ago. The pits were left uncovered and it is dangerous to young children," the trust said.
"The residents are having erratic water supplies since then. Some residents are taking water flowing from the pit to water their gardens and they get water to drink from the boreholes."
The trust said water is a right which is protected in the Constitution, and when this precious commodity is wasted, the Council loses revenue and the right is taken away.
"From this it is evident that the City of Harare is not monitoring their field workers to see to it that they also protect the environment and ensure that the right to water is realised," said the trust.
