A man from Budiriro in Harare has been sentenced to five months in jail for selling his wife's four plate stove after she failed to give him 50c bus fare.
Luckmore Shonhiwa (34) was convicted on his plea when he appeared before magistrate Stanford Mambanje charged with unreasonable disposal of household property.
Magistrate Mambanje initially sentenced him to five months in jail before suspended three months on condition of good behaviour. He also suspended two months on condition that he restitute his wife Beritha Shoriwa her four plate stove by June 30.
"Your worship I admit that I sold the stove because my wife had refused to give me money for bus fare," he said. "I apologize."
Shonihwa sold the stove after he asked his wife on May 31 to give him bus fare and she gave him $1 but he insisted that she should add 50c on top.
This did not go down with him and at 5:30pm he took the white four plate stove and sold it without the knowledge of his wife. The wife reported the matter to the police leading to his arrest.
