Cellphone thief gets 140 hours of community service

As High-fields man has been sentenced to 140 hours of community service after stealing a cellphone.

Togarasei Garapo, 26, was found guilty  when he appeared before Mbare magistrate Shelly Zvenyika charged with theft.

He was sentenced to seven months in jail. Two months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. One month was set aside on condition he restituted the complainant. The remaining four months were suspended on condition he performed 140 hours of community service.

Garapo stole the cellphone belonging to  Lister Kandewu on June 9 after he was given a lift by the friend of Kandewu in his car.

When he disembarked from the car he stole the phone.

A report made to the police led to his arrest.
